GIVING YOUR BEDROOM A MAKEOVER

by Brian Carr on April 18, 2011

Refreshing and bringing up to date the look and feel of your bedroom is something that should be done at least every couple of years. The good news is that doing it does not have to be an expensive project. You can significantly improve the way your bedroom looks for less than $500, which is a good investment considering that you probably spend more time in your bedroom than any other room in your home. Buying a new duvet, linens and pillows should be the first step that you take. You can buy a new set of them for as little as $50 and they will instantly give the whole room a newer and fresher look. You can take one of two approaches – either match up what you buy with the colors and patterns on your walls and carpet or just go for your favorite colors and patterns. Some people feel that they have to play safe and just go for white items, but it is your private room and you can do whatever you like with it. Another option to update the look of your bedroom is to change your bedroom rug, or to add one if you do not currently have one. Even a small rug can add warmth and style to a bedroom. You can get one for around $100, even less if you shop around some markets. Opt for a plain or geometric design and look for one that has a nice texture to it, like a shag rug. If the handles and knobs on your doors, wardrobes and cabinets have not been replaced since you moved in or bought the items, then they will no doubt now be looking worn out. Replacing what you have with new, bold ones with fancy designs will bring new life to the items that they are attached to. As nice, well-made handles and knobs cost just $10 a piece, it will not cost you much at all to make this change. If you can get hold of around $300, you should consider investing in a new headboard. This can serve as a great centerpiece for the room. This change alone can turn a plain looking bedroom into an eye-catching, stylish one. By paying a few hundred dollars you can get a headboard that will add class and sophistication to the room. Repainting the walls is the last thing that you need to do to complete the look of your new bedroom. You can buy paint extremely cheaply and it will only take you a day to do the whole room. Once you have seen your walls with a fresh coat of paint you will realize how faded they had been beforehand. As for the color, it depends on what color scheme you have going on elsewhere in the room, but do not be afraid to try something different – white is so boring!
